Technical instructions
Posts here contain commands, configuration files, code, and step-by-step procedures. These carry real risk. A command that is harmless on one machine can delete data, break a working installation, or lock a user out of a service on another, because versions, permissions, operating systems, and existing configuration all differ.
Before following anything technical on this site:
- Back up anything that cannot be lost.
- Read and understand a command before running it, particularly anything that deletes, changes permissions, or invokes a package manager.
- Test somewhere disposable first where that is possible.
- Check the official documentation for the relevant version, which is authoritative where this site is not.
Technical instructions on this site are followed at the reader’s own risk. The writer accepts no liability for data loss, hardware damage, downtime, broken installations, security incidents, lost work, or any other outcome arising from acting on anything published here.
Opinions about hardware and software
Views on laptops, phones, operating systems, and tools are personal opinions formed through use. They are not measurements and they are not universal. Somebody with different priorities can reasonably reach the opposite conclusion about the same device.
Hardware also varies between units, and manufacturers change panels, drives, thermal designs, and firmware within a single product name without announcing it. A device bought a year after a post here may not be the device the post describes.
Posts go out of date
Software changes quickly. Versions move, flags are renamed, interfaces are redesigned, and APIs are deprecated. A post reflects the situation at the time of writing and nothing more. The publication date on each post is shown so readers can judge how much weight to give it.
No guarantee is made that content here is complete, current, or fit for any particular purpose. Corrections sent to joel@techprobably.com are welcome and will be applied to the post.
No professional relationship
Nothing on this site is professional, legal, financial, or security advice. Reading it creates no professional or advisory relationship between the reader and the writer. Decisions with real consequences deserve more than one source.
External links
This site links to external documentation, repositories, tools, and retailers as a convenience. Those sites are not under the writer’s control. A link does not imply endorsement of the destination, its accuracy, or its products.
Advertising
This site displays advertising through Google AdSense. Which specific ads appear is determined by Google and its partners, not by the writer. Their presence is not an endorsement, and no claim made in an advertisement has been checked or approved here.
This site does not use affiliate links and earns no commission on any product mentioned. No post here has been paid for by a manufacturer or vendor, and no product coverage is arranged in exchange for anything. Advertising revenue is the only income this site generates, and it is unrelated to what any post says.
